Effects of Intrathecal Baclofen on Spasticity

Abstract
For the treatment of spasticity and flexor or extensor spasm, various surgical therapies and oral drugs were applied but there were on satisfiable effects because of adverse effects and suffers to patients. Recently except the mentioned treatments, drugs to regulate abnormal excitement of motor neuron pool are applied and attempted. In other words, it was reported that intrathecal baclofen infusion by suppressing segmental polysynaptic spinal reflex pathways reduced spasticity. By the request of neuro-surgical department, 9 patients with severe spasticity and spasm were observed by administering injectable baclofen that was prepared in pharmacy. In causes of spasticity and spontaneous spasm of 9 patients, 7 cases from cerebral and 2 cases from spinal cord. When baclofen was administered intrathecally, fast effect and prolonged effect were observed than other drugs. Especially greater effects to spasticity of spinal orgin were observed. Complications were not observed.
